Being asked to direct T+W’s “Connect with Greatness” campaign for Supersport in the build up to the Fifa World Cup Russia 2018, was a dream come true.

At the heart of the campaign was the quest to discover and share some of the world’s greatest footballers most cherished and heartfelt stories of World Cup’s, culminating in an intimate interview with arguably the most acclaimed footballer of all time, Pele, in his hometown of Santos in Brazil.

Our whirlwind tour took us to Chester, Wales, to meet England’s sweetheart Michael Owen in  his home, to Sittard in Holland to meet the legendary Sunday Oliseh and on to Lagos to his teammate Jay-Jay Okocha, the “Maradona of Africa.” In Cheltenham in the UK we met Sir Geoff Hurst, the only player to score a hattrick in a final, and in London we met with Chelsea star Victor Moses.

These masters of the game took us on a journey beginning in 1958 when Pele, just 17 years old, won his first of three World Cup’s, through to England’s victory in 1966, to the heroics of 1990 when the world fell in love with Paul Gascoigne for wearing his heart on his sleeve, to the highs of 2010 with Simphiwe Tshabalala’s opening goal of Africa’s first World Cup and the lows when Ghana crashed out in the quarter finals.
